How to Choose a Pilates Instructor
Credentials, lineage, teaching style — what actually matters when selecting your teacher.

The boutique Pilates market has expanded enormously. In any city of meaningful size, you now have options — and options vary wildly. The difference between an excellent Pilates studio and a mediocre one is not visible in the Instagram grid, the marble reception desk, or the pricing. It lives in the instructors' training depth, the class sizes, the quality of the corrections, and a handful of non-obvious operational signals that experienced practitioners know to look for. This guide gives you those signals before you spend £200 on a class pack.

Across every city, the studios that consistently produce practitioners who improve share the same underlying characteristics. They have instructors with deep training and genuine investment in ongoing education. They keep class sizes small enough for meaningful individual attention. They have a clear methodology — not a vague brand aesthetic. And they have instructors who give specific corrections, not generic encouragement.
The challenge is that these characteristics are not visible from outside. A studio's website, its space design, and its social media presence tell you almost nothing about the quality of instruction. You need to attend and know what to observe.
Instructors give specific, individual corrections
In a great class, the instructor will tell you specifically what they observe about your body — 'your left hip is dropping in bridge', 'your ribs are flaring during the hundred', 'lengthen through the back of your neck, not the front'. Generic statements like 'engage your core' or 'breathe into your ribs' that apply to everyone equally are the sign of an instructor giving canned cues rather than observing your actual movement.
The instructor moves around the room constantly
A good group reformer class instructor cannot effectively observe 10–12 practitioners from a fixed position at the front of the room. They should be moving continuously — watching from the side for spinal alignment, from the foot of the reformer for foot position on the footbar, and from above to assess rotation symmetry. An instructor who stands at the front and cues verbally throughout is providing a workout audio track, not instruction.
Class sizes are capped at 10 or fewer for reformer
12 is the absolute maximum for meaningful individual instruction in a reformer class. Studios that run 16 or 20 people are providing group fitness, not Pilates instruction. The revenue incentive to fill machines is significant — the studios that cap at 8–10 are making a deliberate quality decision that costs them money. This is one of the most reliable proxies for instruction quality.
The studio has beginner-specific classes
A studio that puts beginners directly into general intermediate classes is not interested in teaching you correctly — it's interested in filling slots. Excellent studios have an introductory series that covers the fundamental movement principles before you join general classes. This protects you from learning incorrect patterns from day one and protects the more advanced practitioners in general classes from being slowed down by beginners who haven't been taught the basics.
Instructors can name their training and lineage
Ask any instructor: 'Where did you train and who certified you?' A confident, specific answer — 'I'm STOTT certified, I trained with X at Y studio, and I've completed additional workshops in Z' — indicates someone who takes their professional credentials seriously. Vague answers about 'various trainings' or defensiveness at the question are red flags.
Classes described as 'full-body burn' or 'high intensity Pilates'
These are marketing terms for studios that have added Pilates-adjacent movements to a HIIT format. The results are not Pilates and the instruction is typically superficial.
Instructors who can't explain why they're asking you to do something
Ask why you're exhaling on a particular moment. A good instructor gives a specific biomechanical reason. 'Because that's how we do it' is not instruction.
No intake process or health history for new clients
A studio that puts you on a reformer without asking about injuries, surgeries, or conditions is taking legal and ethical shortcuts. Good studios have intake forms and often brief individual conversations before a new client's first session.
Equipment that's visibly worn, squeaky, or poorly maintained
Reformer springs under tension are safety equipment. A studio that doesn't maintain its machines doesn't respect its clients or their safety. Listen for squeaking carriages and observe the condition of the springs, ropes, and shoulder blocks.
Instructors who only teach from the front of the room
If an instructor does not leave the front of the room during a 55-minute reformer class, they are not observing your body. They are leading a guided movement session. There is a meaningful difference.
Studios where the aesthetic does more work than the instruction
Beautiful spaces with dim lighting, luxury changing rooms, and expensive equipment can coexist with poor teaching. They can also coexist with excellent teaching. The aesthetic tells you the price point, not the quality.
Is a more expensive studio always better?
No — price correlates with location and aesthetic investment, not instruction quality. Some of the best Pilates instruction available is at studios in unfashionable locations with modest fit-outs. The instructors who genuinely know the method are sometimes found in exactly those places, because they are not competing on aesthetic.
How do I know if I'm improving at the right studio?
After three months of regular attendance (2–3 times per week), you should be noticeably stronger, your instructor should know your body's specific patterns and be actively working to address them, and you should be progressing through a more challenging repertoire. If you're doing the same exercises at the same difficulty level as you were in your first month and no one has suggested progression, you are not at a studio that is actively teaching you.
Should I stay local or travel to a better studio?
Proximity matters for consistency. A good studio you attend three times a week produces better results than an excellent studio you attend once because of travel time. Within your practical range, apply the quality criteria above. If there genuinely is no good studio within reasonable distance, a combination of online private sessions with a highly qualified remote instructor and in-person visits to better studios when travelling is a viable approach.
What's the difference between a boutique studio and a gym Pilates class?
Reformer classes at gyms typically have larger class sizes (16–20+), less specialised instructors who may teach multiple fitness formats, and less individualised attention. The equipment is also often the less expensive tier. For beginners, a gym Pilates class can be a reasonable introduction. For practitioners who want genuine progression and instruction, a dedicated boutique studio with the quality criteria described in this article is the appropriate environment.
